About EMDR

EMDR is a research/evidence backed therapy approach that works to allow a client to reprocess a memory so that disturbance can be removed, allowing a person to move forward from the memory in a functional way. With this, we can see significant changes in many different mental health disorders, especially: PTSD, anxiety, and depression. When we experience trauma, we can understand that the brain stores that memory incorrectly which causes issues such as flashbacks and panic attacks. EMDR allows the memory to be processed correctly so the memory is "put back" in the correct place so, while we don't delete memories, we can feel ok with the disturbance that once existed.

Bilateral stimulation is used to reprocess with EMDR, which is most commonly having eyes go back and fourth, self-tapping, or using vibrating tappers. EMDR is an 8 phase treatment so a client gradually moves up to processing. Safety and coping is a priority and we absolutely work together to feel as ready as we can to get to working on memories.
